Q&A with Dr Jim Faed - QUESTION FIVE Is it possible to overdose on stem cells? The clinical trial studies that have been carried out so far have mostly used to doses in the range of 1–2 million cells per kilogram of bodyweight. No adverse effects have been recognised at these dose levels. No information exists on effects from higher dose levels. It should be remembered that most studies have used intravenous injection of the stem cells. Some orthopaedic studies have been carried out in which localised high concentrations of the cells have been produced in tissues to assist with repairing bone or other connective tissue. These studies have not found any unusual or adverse effects from the high concentrations of cells.
