Q. Shalom Rav, could you please tell me what do you think: Sourate 21-95 And there is prohibition upon [the people of] a city [Jerusalem] which We have destroyed that they will [ever] return. 21-96. Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend. 21-105? A. Wa aleikum salaam wa rahmatullah. Surat l-Anbiyaa 21,95 -97 says And (there is) prohibition upon a city which We have destroyed, that they will not return.Until when has been opened (for) the Gog and Magog (Yajuj and Majuj), and they from every elevation (hadabin) descend (yansiluna). And has approached the true promise then behold, (the) eyes (are) staring (of) those who disbelieved, O woe to us! Verily, we had been in heedlessness of this; nay, we were wrongdoers. Ibn Kathir does not understand a city to be specifically Jerusalem, but every city which Allah SWT has caused to be destroyed. It is the opinion of Ibn Kathir that Gog and Magog are We have already mentioned that they are from the progeny of Adam, upon him be peace; they are also descents of Nuh through his son Yafith (Japheth), who was the father of the Turks, Turk referring to the group of them who were left behind the barrier which was built by Dhul-Qarnayn. The triliteral root ha dal ba (ح د ب) occurs only once in the Quran, as the noun. Ibn Kathir says a Hadab is a raised portion of land on the authority of was the view of Ibn `Abbas, `Ikrimah, Abu Salih, Ath-Thawri and others. IMHO, this ayah reminds me of the descriptions in the Torah of the return of the Children of Israel to the Holy Land. The root ha dal means sharp or extreme and the word yansiluna in other ayat is translated to come in haste. One could speculate that hadabin means extreme places or ends of the earth rather than raised places. This would mean that they referred to the Children of Israel and not Gog and Magog. So perhaps and they from every elevation descend might be understood to mean and they from the ends of the earth will come in haste. > I am unaware that the Sea of Galillee is almost dry. Two years ago it overflowed its banks. The peace agreement between Israel and Jordan, provides a water-sharing agreement where Jordanians receive a fixed 50 million cubic meters (about 25%) no matter what drought conditions prevail. So there are a lot of people Israelis, Jordanians and Palestinians drinking that water. The idea that Gog and Magog will drink the water refers to wartime action of an invading army.
