Q and A Time... Question: Danny, whats more important for a basketball player... skill or strength? Answer: Without a doubt, skill. I mean, what good is it to be strong if you cant knock down an elbow jumper! With that said, increasing strength can do wonders to help a player take his/her game to the next level. Getting stronger means more range on the jump shot, more And-1s, higher potential for increased speed/power (i.e. higher vertical jump), less chance of getting injured (can take more of a pounding when taking charges, diving for loose balls, etc. And less chance for ACL injuries, etc). Improved strength can help make you a better defender... for example, I often guarded guys 4-6 taller than me, but I RARELY got posted up b/c I was strong enough to keep the guy from getting to his spot in the post). If all of the above qualities are important to you as a b-ball player (and they obviously should be), then get your butt in the weight room. But Danny, I play so much basketball that I cant find time to ALSO get in the weight room. Well, there are 168 hours in a week, if you cant find 1.5-3 hours (two-three 45-60 minute lifting sessions) per week to block off for the weight room, then I say its time to restructure your weekly schedule. Get it done!
