On that aspect the playing field is level. Fuel they buy overseas will be as per others pay refuelling there. In FY 2012-13 Qantas had turnover of $15.9 billion (!) and made $6 million profit. If they paid $118 million carbon tax that’s 1.3% of turnover. If you choose to buy carbon credits on flights to say, melbourne, it’ll add maybe $2 to your fare. If they added $2 to fares and ”sold that as carbon credits included, it’s a PR win. BTW keep an eye out for Senator Xenophon’s comments, he’s been forensically examining QANTAS for a few years now and is scathing on management’s book diddling (which you can be sure the govt know about).
