QBRC - RETURN OF THE OLD HANDS? There was great delight in the border counties at the announcement of QBRC signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Aventas Group during the week. It was the main topic of conversation, particularly in Cavan and Leitrim but was sadly moderated in the Derrylin/ Teemore areas by an unprecedented outpouring of grief and sympathy for the Winterson family on the tragic, accidental death of their only child Caolan. We include them in our prayers over these sad days. Congratulations are due to the prospective new owners John Mc Cartan, Bosco O Hagan and Ernie Fisher. There is widespread belief that these men are acting with the agreement of the Quinn Family as Johns father Joe has been a highly regarded, honest politician and still maintains this high regard in the local communities as does his son; Bosco is a long time associated with the Quinn group and his expert work in the Slieve Russell is testament to that as is his love for and loyalty to the GAA, traits that the Quinn family hold very dear; Ernie Fisher, brother of the late Bertie, who died so tragically, has had a long, successful working relationship with the Quinn Group and we remember with some sadness the rallying organised by both companies up the new mountain road when Bertie was at his peak. The ex- directors of Quinn Group will be a very valuable asset to the running of the Company as their experience under Sean Quinn will have prepared them well for their undertakings. The growth of Quinn Group was spectacular, owing in no small part to Sean Quinn himself, his commitment and his work ethic; this was emulated by his staff and in particular by his CEOs. David Mackey was the first CEO and under his stewardship there was unprecedented growth and development which continued during Liam Mc Caffreys tenure. Workers and locals were delighted to see Dave back in the forefront at the rallies supporting the Quinn family and speaking so passionately at the public meeting in Ballyconnell Community Centre. It seems to all locals that QBRC will put Quinn products back at the top and staff will have increased motivation and determination to make it work. We have had a tough few years, being gagged and intimidated but most of us stayed on hoping for the return of the old team. Hopefully this wish will soon be fulfilled. However we have to be particularly cautious of the Aventas statement- “There is no certainty a transaction will be concluded”. When we look at the track record with Lagan and CEVA there is no guarantee. As Mark Twain said _”The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” We wish QBRC well in their due diligence.
