QMU Principal gifted with photograph on behalf of the people of Taiwan This week, the Director General of Taipei presented the Principal of QMU with a valuable photograph as a symbol of friendship and good will. The photograph of a Taiwanese treasure ship was presented to Professor Petra Wend by Marc Jenchung Su, Director General, Taipei Representation Office in the UK on behalf of the people of Taiwan. The photograph depicts a treasure ship which has been set alight and has been sent to sea. It illustrates similar rituals involving the deliberate burning of Shetland Viking ships – rituals which are designed to bring good health, happiness and luck to those who launch the ships. Professor Petra Wend, who is an artist herself, was delighted to receive the exquisite gift from the representatives from Taipei. The University’s Professor Joe Goldblatt, Director of the International Centre for the Study of Planned Events, first noticed the unusual photograph at a Taiwanese exhibition hosted in Edinburgh earlier this year. He was particularly intrigued by the photo and enquired about the possibility of the purchasing it and donating it to the University. Instead, as a gesture of friendship, the Director General offered the photograph as a gift. The dramatic photography will now be housed within the Queen Margaret University’s art collection and will become a permanent feature on display at the University’s modern campus just outside Edinburgh. The presentation of the photography took place at a small reception involving guests from Taipei, the Principal, academics and Taiwanese students from Queen Margaret University. Professor Joe Goldblatt, said: “We are delighted that the photograph that I initially admired at the exhibition, is now to become part of the University’s official art collection in Edinburgh. It symbolises a friendship and developing relationship between staff and students at Queen Margaret University and our colleagues at the Taiwanese Consulate in Edinburgh.”
