Kathy Dong was a facilitator that helped teachers develop their leadership voice for their passion. The purpose of this conference was to help develop a voice for teacher leadership. ASK: Do You Currently Have Health Insurance? Get Covered America is coming to your school and placing a dropbox in your school office. The goal for the dropbox is outreach to find those families, employees and general community members who may not have health insurance, and get them critical information on affordable health insurance options through the Marketplace and Medicaid. This is a free service provided by Get Covered America. Family Education Nights @ Mission Manor Literacy Connects will be starting up their very successful “Family Education Nights” at Mission Manor Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Literacy Connects will also be offering FREE English Classes at Esperanza, (Wednesdays and Fridays) and Los Niños (Mondays and Wednesdays) 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. at both schools. These workshops are open to ALL SUSD families. Family Reading Night at Los Niños Literacy Connects invites you to celebrate the very first Infusion Project Family Reading Night that takes place at Los Niños on Thursday, September 25, 5:30-7:00 p.m. The event is a collaboration of SUSD, Los Niños, Parents As Teachers, and Literacy Connects. Parents from the Los Niños Head Start Center have also been invited. October is Anti-Bullying Month THE CHALLENGE IS ON for student and employee submitted videos! Get your creativity and innovation on. Spread the word in your school and classroom as we begin a month-long campaign to end bullying and become KIND schools and a KIND community! More information will be forthcoming in the next weeks. Go Grrrls Project Starts Soon! ALL GIRLS aged 11-15 can participate in these empowering workshops to gain skills and knowledge to plan for a better future. Girls who join Go Grrrls learn about reproductive health, healthy relationships, decision making, self-esteem, communication, positive body image … all while connecting with other girls and a professional facilitator whose goal is to empower them with skills for life! The first session is a pizza party! Girls who participate receive snacks and small prizes each day of the program, and those girls with perfect attendance receive a special gift on the last day. $19,000 HOPE Grant Awarded for Expansion of Student Experiences in Health Careers. The University of Arizona College of Medicine has approved Sunnyside as a recipient of the U OF A HOPE Grant. The total we are receiving is over $19,000.00, which will be used to provide primarily 9th and 10th graders at Sunnyside HS the opportunity to engage in interactive experiences to explore careers in medicine and health care and to facilitate the collaboration of teachers and students in the Freshman Academy and the Medical and Health Careers Academy. We will have a waiting area for patients and families set up. This is the first of a regular monthly visit and collaboration with the UA Mobile Health Van! Desert View Spotlighted for BEST PRACTICES The Desert View High School iSTEM Academy (selected programs: Precision Machining, Mechanical Drafting and Engineering) have been recommended to be listed as a national Best Practice example for the Manufacturing Institute brochure campaign. The Manufacturing Institute is spotlighting DVHS as part of their efforts to promote the manufacturing industry and the Skills Certification System in Arizona.
