QUE PASA SUNNYSIDE.............. NEWS Desert View Alumni in PCC Theater Production of Fiddler on the Roof Desert View theater troupe students had a wonderful treat at seeing PCC’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof” and it was a truly amazing performance because 4 of our very own Desert View Theatre Grads were performing and making us proud. Robots are Rolling at Summit View Summit View’s Robotics Club was the only Sunnyside elementary school to compete in Tempe on Saturday, March 1st. Competition was part of the Arizona State University VEX IQ Robotics Event. Congratulations Summit View for sending a team of students from grades 1st to 5th along with their sponsors Miguel Lara, Tanaya Matthews, Victor Rodriguez and Melissa Soto. Challenger Students Featured in Challenger teacher Leslie Janes Moll’s 8th grade Social Studies class had an opportunity to visit the Jewish History Museum downtown in January, whose comments were captured by an Arizona Daily Star news reporter. The students had impressive insight and some their responses were included in an article about the museum. Congratulations Challenger students who represented our school very well. Desert View Precision Machining Students Featured in Newspaper Article. Recently, about 160 Desert View students toured local aerospace manufacturing companies. The tours were in groups of about 15 students and on one tour, they were accompanied by the AZ Daily Star Business reporter and another group was accompanied by Fernanda from the local KUAT PBS Channel 6. Cougar Classic Tournament on Video Here’s your chance to take a peek at a very cool video that the Roskruge “Cougar Classic” Tournament Director created from this year’s tournament that featured various SUSD elementary basketball teams (along with TUSD). Elvira Goes to the Capitol On Thursday of Rodeo Break, teachers Kelley Brooks and Kerri Ravenscroft and Principal Andy Townsend chaperoned a group of Elvira 5th-grade students to the AZ State Capitol in Phoenix. The students earned the chance to participate on the merits of an essay they each submitted. At the Capitol, the students enjoyed a tour that helped supplement their learning about history and government. We were also honored to be hosted by State Representative Sally Ann Gonzales who introduced the Elvira group in a legislative session. We The People is a Winner at Challenger There is no question that the Executive and Legislative branches of our government do not rank high on most peoples list of favorites. In fact, most polls show both Congress and the White House to be at an all-time low in public opinion. But learn how our Challenger students are ranking high in Washington D.C. Elvira Eagles see the Suns On February 25th, the Elvira Eagles basketball team traveled to Phoenix for a Suns game. Players were treated to a variety of events at the stadium and enjoyed the chance to cap off a memorable basketball season at Elvira. Students Deep Dive into “The Glass Menagerie” Sunnyside High School’s AP English Literature classes attended the University of Arizona’s production of Tennessee Williams’ play The Glass Menagerie on Friday, February 28 with the help of a grant provided by the Wildcat Writers program. The Sunnyside students watched and discussed the play with their UA collaboration partners in Dr. Shumake’s ENG 109 H class, and they participated in a question/answer session with the director, the dramaturgs, the set designer, and the lighting specialist, Carlos Sanchez (a former Sunnyside student). Requisition Deadlines Are Approaching As is customary this time of year, our wonderful Purchasing Department staff have sent information to each school regarding the deadlines for procurement as we near the end of the school year. (yes, the end is in sight). Please check with your school office and make sure you are aware of these deadlines for purchases you may have planned to make yet this year. Liberty Elementary and Desert View Team Up for STEM Desert View STEM girls visited Liberty Elementary to mentor a 2nd grade class and to share their excitement for STEM. This event was another wonderful business partnership activity sponsored in part by Rosemary Badain and Raytheon. Sunnyside DECA Goes to the Big Apple Sunnyside DECA traveled to NY over Rodeo Break. They spent 5 days sightseeing and experiencing NY’s day to day hustle and bustle. It was a very rewarding experience for all the students and extremely educational. Sunnyside Students get Live Introduction to International Business The students in the Academy of International Business, Publications and Information Technology at Sunnyside High School learn about international business through presentations such as the one in Ms. Terri Bible’s Marketing class presented by an international business owner Phil English (husband of Sunnyside ITC Li-Lin English).
