QUEENS BLANK DALE Full time at the REC, 35-33 to Queens, and with that the end to the winter season, reports KAMVA SOMDYALA Well, it was another traditional derby affair as Queens College and Dale College collided at the Rec on Saturday. It was a game of two halves with each side owning a half a piece. It was a high flying, try scoring match that lived up to its expectations. Early physical exchanges marked intent from both sides as breakdown dominance was key. Dale could have opened the score within the first 5 minutes but a perfectly timed sack at line-out time ensured a turn-over for Queens. That relieved the pressure. And then again, 2 minutes later, Justerino Davids missed a penalty attempt. However, Dale was on the onslaught and they would soon be rewarded with a try in the 10th minute. Davids missed the conversion. Indeed Davidss tactical and goal kicking were not on point on the day. Queens quickly reduced their account through a Leroy Kuyler penalty in the 13th minute. 5-3 it stood. Davids kept Dales scoreboard ticking when they [Dale] were awarded a penalty, extending the lead to 8-3. Luzuko Mase, the Dale winger went over in the corner to extend the lead to 13-3 lead, leaving a 10 point deficit for Queens to recover. Queens quickly replied though through Dan Mureguzi whos knocked on kick found its way back into his hands, he gathered and was off for a 30m sprint. The conversion from the corner was missed by Kuyler. Dale, with ball in hand were dangerous and made their intentions felt as Dale scored yet again in the 35th minute through prop Zimi Ngqongqwana, by now Dale brought the deficit back to 10. The 18-8 score line tells of Dales dominance, which they continued into the 2nd half. Davids was on foot again to miss a penalty attempt in the 40th minute of the match, but made no mistake 5 minutes later to extended Dales lead. Queens replied instantly. Inter-linking play from the backs saw Yaw Penxe run clean through. Captain Avela Jubase received the ball from the recycle, as he came short, Jamie Brookes received the pass and he went over for the score. 18-21 the score stood. By this phase of the game, the tables had turned and Dale was on the back foot. The pressure was on from Queens and they made it show as quick ball gave Queens an overlap on the wide channel for them to exploit, and as Jubase went over, Queens took the lead (23-21) for the first time in the match as the match entered the 50th minute mark. We could barely keep up as an error by Dale saw Penxe go over for a try of his own in a solo sprint down the touchline, beating defenders on his way. Kuyler made no mistake of the easy conversion to make the score 30-21. Yamkela Nyalambisa resurrected Dales match campaign when he crashed over under the posts, reducing his sides deficit to 2. Uhuru Vanda enjoyed a try of his own before a quick reply from Dale only managed to get them within 2 points as the score was 35-33 to Queens. And thats how it ended at the REC
