QUENCHING THE THIRST Then he became very thirsty; so he cried out to the LORD and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant; and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? ”-Judges 15:18 It’s odd to find Samson, the superhero of the Bible crying out to the Lord in weakness. This is the only time that we see Samson without strength prior to the time that his head was shaved and the Philistines captured him (Judg. 16:21). In the preceding verses, Samson had slaughtered 1000 Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. Pride had filled his heart and he was boasting in his own strength. That quickly changed when he became extremely thirsty. We also need to remember that our strength comes from God. We must always give God the glory when He delivers us out of our troubles. The prophet Isaiah says, “He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.” (Is. 40:29). In verse 19, God mercifully gave Samson the water that he desperately needed. It miraculously came out of a rock. However, God can give us something better than water from a rock. In the New Testament, Jesus refers to Himself as “The Living Water”, when He is speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well. “Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.” (John 4:13-14).
