QUESTION ABOUT LOCAL CHURCH MEMBERSHIP?? God wants Christians to be "together" in local church fellowship of work and worship (Acts 2:42-47, 9:26). A congregation is a voluntary association likened unto a "team of saints" that "strive together for the faith of the gospel" (Phil 1:27, 1:1), as well an interdependent body (1 Cor 12:12-27). QUESTION: I was asked by a brother, under what circumstance is it scriptural to leave a congregation?? He observed that many leave in a huff about something and never try to resolve the problem or disagreement at issue in the congregation. He noted in the Corinthian church that "the faithful few" were not told to leave that troubled congregation which had numerous sins. The apostle Paul says that God had placed each member there in the body to exemplify unity in diversity (1 Cor 12:18). Also, the faithful few at Sardis, who walked with Christ in white amid a "dead" church, were not told to leave but was assumed they would remain (Rev 3:4). So, what scriptural principles regulate leaving a congregation as a matter of personal preference. Also, I think it is clear that one could not be part of congregation that would cause them to violate their conscience and sin by some congregational practice (Rom 14:23, Eph 5:11).
