QUESTION: How do I get a job in mining? ANSWER: Getting a job in the mining industry is not that difficult or only limited to big, strong men. For specific mining jobs such as a geologist or metallurgist, you do need specific qualifications, but that are a range of career opportunities within the industry. Most people’s perception of the industry is wrong. If I say that I am a miner, it does not mean that I only work underground. Even as an executive, I do go underground from time to time, but my job is focused on financial reporting, staff engagement and investor relations. Although I believe that it would be beneficial to have a mining and/or engineering qualification, we employ teachers, accountants, lawyers, doctors, administration experts, human resource specialists, safety officers, etc. A job is yours if you are prepared to make a difference, work really hard, face the challenges and be a team player. You also need to ascribe to our values – safety, accountability, achievement, connectedness and honesty. I am a lawyer by profession, heading up the Corporate and Investor Relations team – my team’s qualifications range from financial accounting to public relations. Most mining websites have a section advertising available careers/vacancies, where you can apply for a job and register your CV – should a position become available, we will inform you. - Marian van der Walt (Executive: Corporate and Investor Relations: Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited)
