QUESTION OF THE DAY In a closely watched case in Connecticut, the state supreme court has ruled that the state can force a 17 year old girl to undergo chemotherapy. The girl has Hodgkins lymphoma and decided not to receive chemotherapy because she believes it will do more damage than good. When her mother agreed with her decision, the Connecticut Department of Children and Families took temporary custody of the teen, and her mother was ordered to cooperate with medical care administered under the agency’s supervision. Issues surrounding the welfare of children are difficult for some ideologies to speak to. Most mainstream ideologies advocate for the ability of the state to help neglected or abused children. Some libertarians and anarchists have controversial positions on this issue. So my question of the day is, do you agree with the Connecticut court decision? Under what circumstances is state intervention with children warranted?
