QUESTION OF THE DAY: Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky? ANSWER: The answer to this question can be traced to an October 13th, actually. During medieval times, the Templar Knights were a European religious military order whose job was to safeguard Christian travellers on their pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In this job, they amassed a fortune greater than any king because they established the first continental credit banking system. With this system of borrowing and interest in place, their largest debtors soon included Philip the Fair (the King of France) and the Pope. Jealous of the wealth held by the Templars, a plan was hatched between the two rulers to rid themselves of the debt, and turn that debt into personal wealth for themselves. Soldiers were sent throughout the Christian world with secret orders that were to opened on a specific date... That date was Friday, October 13th, 1307. On that date, the orders were opened simultaneously across Europe by soldiers placed in strategic Templar strongholds. They were to arrest, torture, and execute as many Templar knights as possible, and to plunder the treasure held by them. Over 1,000 Templars were executed. They were baselessly accused of heresy by the Pope, therefore forming the excuse to retake the Knights wealth. The Order ceased to exist as a public functioning body after that date. And that is why Friday the 13th is considered unlucky.
