QUESTION:Tara Kelly - Is it better to get in your workout on an empty stomach and have your WAVSmart post workout or is it better to have your WAVSmart before your workout? To answer Tara Kellys question about pre and post workout strategies: The fasting workout strategy is a controversial one. Working out on an empty stomach is risky for weight loss because it can result in sacrificed muscle mass. The weight might come off... but at the risk of losing muscle which is metabolically active at a level that it is supposed to be helping you burn away calories. If one has had a good week of eating glycogen loading foods - namely carbohydrate sources such as sweet potato, yam, brown rice, Kamut or other ancient grains and the weeks workload has not been too depleting of glycogen then it is more likely that glycogen stores in muscle and the liver are sufficient to sustain a short workout (40 minutes max) without risk for muscle catabolism (wasting). When I say GOOD WEEK I mean a rationalised conscious Trim4Life guided week... not an emotionally driven week of carbs. In this context a fasting cardio workout may be acceptable. However, if the body begins to catabolize muscle during this workout (which will be difficult to pull through mentally), then the long term effect of repeating this muscle wasting practice is gradual loss of fat-melting tissue which makes it more difficult in due time to lose weight and more likely for one to rebound and gain more fat weight than one had before the restrictive weight management attempt if you quit and rebound. I prefer to bracket my workout to safeguard muscle by using a small amount of HIGH LEUCINE containing protein before the workout with FOCUS. FOCUS at preworkout literally turns on a metabolic switch that causes the body to BURN fat for oxidative processes (energy generation) instead of first using up muscle stores of glycogen. Typically in the first 15 minutes of the workout the body will use local muscle glycogen as an energy source and then begin to slowly and gradually switch to using fat (and burning away fat). By using 1/2 to one serving of WAVBeyond or WAVSmart (formulated intentionally to have HIGH LEUCINE) and a WAVFocus before the 30-40 minute workout muscle is spared, glycogen is spared and fat is burned away! Leucine induces muscle sparing to protect lean tissues and signal them (and bone) to restore and rebuild. This is what we want. Post workout requires another serving of your preferred protein source.... BUT REMEMBER THAT OCCASIONALLY YOU CAN TREAT YOURSELF WITH A SWEET TREAT AFTER THE WORKOUT IN ORDER TO RESTORE GLYCOGEN. Drink one cup of chocolate milk and another WAVSmart or WAVBeyond serving after the workout. OR Have a cookie and a WAVSmart after the workout. BUT IF YOU HAVE NOT WORKED HARD ENOUGH TO BURN AWAY MUSCLE GLYCOGEN DURING THE WORKOUT.... FORGET THE TREAT. EARN IT. ENJOY IT and dont be a glutton.
