QUESTION: Terror is more about whats unseen, about what you cant hear - or rather, what is revealed slowly... a soft sound you cant quite put your finger on, a subtle movement in the distance. Just enough to pique your curiosity and make you uneasy without informing you flat-out that youre in danger. Books and film can do this, but it happens in real life, too. This slow accumulation of unsettling details often leaves people paralyzed with curiosity as your brain tries to make sense of the facts. Horror is more in-your-face. Its speaks - nay, SCREAMS - of danger. Its a threat to your life and limb in no uncertain terms. Its a beast snarling in your face, a killer leaping out from behind a tree with knife (or axe or gun or chainsaw) in hand. It sends you into a fight-or-flight response and makes you jump and shudder with fear. Films do this with the crescendo of music and the flash of an unpleasant image. The question is... Which scare do you prefer? Which one sticks with you the longest? --A.P.M.
