QUESTION regarding Bartons base running in Game #1. I watched the replay today. Barton did his job and got on base in a 0-0 game in the B-8th. Then he advanced to 2nd on a ball that got a short way away from the catcher. At that point As broadcaster (cant recall which one) said it was great baserunning from Barton. Now, heres the question.... When Josh Donaldson hit the ball all the way to the top of the CF fence everyone hoped it would go out, but Barton was off the bag by what looked to me several steps. He was trying to judge if it was going out or if it would be caught. At that moment realizing that the ball wasnt out and instead off the fence, what would Barton have done if the ball was CAUGHT? He wouldve taken those few steps back and tagged up and tried to advance to third. Could he have been thrown out? Maybe if he had gone halfway (as Fosse said he shouldve) then maybe he couldnt have made it to 3rd? ....... Obviously, Barton played it safe. But, I wonder for the life of me what in hell was Gallego doing as the 3rd base coach? He shouldve been screaming his head off to Barton, and Barton shouldve been paying equal attention to his coach. Id like to hear what Gallego has to say.
