QUESTIONING HISTORY: This weeks ANSWER. This weeks question was Water service was provided to residents of Rockingham in 1908. Where did it come from? and the answer is... Water was supplied by a Water Works owned by a private corporation. Water came from what was said to be an “inexhaustible” supply from the pumping station in the Hamlet area, six miles distant. A 10-inch main ran by gravity flow from Hamlet to a 100,000-gallon elevated tank. In the city there were about two and three-quarters miles of main lines, which were 4, 6 and 8 inches in diameter with 44 double hydrants and seven dead ends. Pressure varied from 60 pounds at the Court House to 90 pounds at the Seaboard Air Line Railroad Depot on Caroline Street. The elevated tank could be shut off and 80 pounds of pressure maintained.
