QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR THE DAY Question: Blessed Sabbath brother Jay. The speaking of tongues as you see in Pentecostal churches, can you give me an opinion if it is biblical or not, and what the speaking in tongues in the bible is about. Greetings in Yahuah. Shabbat Shalom Brother Answer: Speaking in Tongues: The way they do it in the Pentecostal churches is not of scripture in most cases that I know of. When a person speaks in tongues it is supposed to be edifying for the Assembly, not something that a person does every day. It is for the building up of the body of Messiah and not for show or to be said in front of others and then when asked about it they say it is my prayer language or have you never heard a person speak in tongues before, but without the person being able to understand what it was they said. It is to be a word of solid meat for them or so people can understand them In the language that they speak and someone is supposed to be able to interpret what is said instead of just a bunch of goobalygop going on. 1Co 12:4 And there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 1Co 12:5 There are different kinds of services, but the same Master. 1Co 12:6 And there are different kinds of workings, but it is the same Elohim who is working all in all. 1Co 12:7 And to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for profiting, 1Co 12:8 for to one is given a word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 1Co 12:9 and to another belief by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit, 1Co 12:10 and to another operations of powers, and to another prophecy, and to another discerning of spirits, and to another kinds of tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues. 1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these, distributing to each one individually as He intends. We are to test the spirits to make sure that what is coming out of us is of a clean spirit and not an unclean spirit. If the person speaking in tongues can’t be understood by at least 1-3 people then they are filled with an unclean spirit. We are told it is better that we didn’t speak in tongues and had other gifts of the spirit. In one case I had a guy who was driving with me in the passenger’s seat start going into what sounded like Latin and something else to me, but the man didn’t speak Latin. So I asked him what he was doing and he said “Oh that is my prayer language”. I couldn’t understand it and it was of no benefit for either one of us for him doing it. It weirded me out a bit and just didn’t feel right as he was doing it. 1Co 14:3 But he who is prophesying speaks upbuilding and encouragement and comfort to men. 1Co 14:4 He who is speaking in a tongue builds up himself, but he who is prophesying builds up the assembly. 1Co 14:5 Now I wish you all spoke with tongues, but rather that you might prophesy, for he who is prophesying is greater than he who is speaking with tongues, unless he interprets, so that the assembly might receive upbuilding. 1Co 14:6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you, either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by teaching? 1Co 14:7 Nevertheless, lifeless instruments making a sound, whether flute or harp, if they do not make a distinction in the sound, how shall it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 1Co 14:8 For indeed, if the trumpet makes an indistinct sound, who shall prepare himself for battle? 1Co 14:9 So also you, if you do not give speech by the tongue that is clear, how shall it be known what is spoken? For you shall be speaking into the air. 1Co 14:10 There are, undoubtedly, so many kinds of sounds in the world, and none of them is without distinct sound. 1Co 14:11 If then I do not know the power of the voice, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks be a foreigner to me. 1Co 14:12 So also you, since you are ardent for spiritual gifts, seek to excel in the upbuilding of the assembly. 1Co 14:13 Therefore, he who is speaking in a tongue, let him pray that he might interpret. 1Co 14:14 For if I am praying in a tongue, my spirit is praying, but my understanding is without fruit. 1Co 14:15 What then is it? I shall pray with the spirit, and I shall also pray with the understanding. I shall sing with the spirit, and I shall also sing with the understanding. 1Co 14:16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how shall he who fills up the place of the unlearned say “Amĕn” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you say? 1Co 14:17 For you truly give thanks well, but the other is not built up. 1Co 14:18 I thank my Elohim I speak with tongues more than you all, 1Co 14:19 but in an assembly I wish to speak five words with my understanding that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 1Co 14:20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking, but in evil be babes, and in your thinking be perfect. 1Co 14:21 In the Torah it has been written, “With men of other tongues and other lips I shall speak to this people. And even so, they shall not hear Me, says יהוה.” 1Co 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers, and prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. 1Co 14:23 If then all the assembly comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are unlearned or unbelievers, shall they not say that you are mad? 1Co 14:24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an unlearned one comes in, he is reproved by all, he is discerned by all. 1Co 14:25 And so the secrets of his heart are revealed. And so, falling down on his face, he shall worship Elohim, declaring that Elohim is truly among you. 1Co 14:26 What then is it, brothers? Whenever you come together, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all be done for upbuilding. 1Co 14:27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 1Co 14:28 And if there is no interpreter, let him be silent in an assembly, and let him speak to himself and to Elohim. 1Co 14:29 And let two or three prophets speak, and let the others discern. 1Co 14:30 And if there should be a revelation to another who sits by, let the first be silent. 1Co 14:31 For you are all able to prophesy one by one, so that all learn and all be encouraged. 1Co 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 1Co 14:33 For Elohim is not Elohim of disorder but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the set-apart ones. We must use the gifts of the spirit for the building up and not for boasting in ourselves. 1Co 13:1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of messengers, but do not have love, I have become as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 1Co 13:2 And if I have prophecy, and know all secrets and all knowledge, and if I have all belief, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am none at all. 1Co 12:28 And Elohim has appointed these in the assembly: firstly emissaries, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, ministrations, kinds of tongues. 1Co 12:29 Are all emissaries? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 1Co 12:30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 1Co 12:31 But earnestly seek the better gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way. Act 2:1 And when the Day of the Festival of Weeks had come, they were all with one mind in one place. Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from the heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Act 2:3 And there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and settled on each one of them. Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Set-apart Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them to speak. Act 2:5 Now in Yerushalayim there were dwelling Yehuḏim, dedicated men from every nation under the heaven. Act 2:6 And when this sound came to be, the crowd came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Act 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying to each other, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? Act 2:8 “And how do we hear, each one in our own language in which we were born? Act 2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Act 2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Yahudah and proselytes, Act 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our own tongues the great deeds of Elohim.” Act 2:12 And they were all amazed, and were puzzled, saying to each other, “What does this mean?” Act 2:13 And others mocking said, “They have been filled with sweet wine.” Act 2:14 But Kĕpha, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and said to them, “Men of Yehuḏah and all those dwelling in Yerushalayim, let this be known to you, and listen closely to my words. Act 2:15 “For these men are not drunk, as you imagine, since it is only the third hour of the day. Act 2:16 “But this is what was spoken by the prophet Yo’ĕl: Act 2:17 ‘And it shall be in the last days, says Elohim, that I shall pour out of My Spirit on all flesh. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams, Act 2:18 and also on My male servants and on My female servants I shall pour out My Spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy. Act 2:19 ‘And I shall show wonders in the heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: blood and fire and vapour of smoke. Act 2:20 ‘The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and splendid day of יהוה. Act 2:21 ‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the Name of יהוה shall be saved.’1 Footnote: 1Joel 2:28-32, Rom. 10:13. Act 2:22 “Men of Yisra’ĕl, hear these words: יהושע of Natsareth, a Man from Elohim, having been pointed out to you by mighty works, and wonders, and signs which Elohim did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know, Act 2:23 this One, given up by the set purpose and foreknowledge of Elohim, you have impaled and put to death through the hands of lawless men – Act 2:24 “Him Elohim raised up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was impossible that He could be held in its grip. Act 2:25 “For Dawiḏ says concerning Him, ‘I saw יהוה before me continually, because He is at my right hand, in order that I should not be shaken. Act 2:26 ‘For this reason my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad, and now my flesh shall also rest in expectation, Act 2:27 because You shall not leave my being in the grave, nor shall You give Your Kind One to see corruption. Act 2:28 ‘You have made known to me the ways of life, You shall fill me with joy in Your presence.’1 Footnote: 1Ps. 16:8-11. Act 2:29 “Men and brothers, let me speak boldly to you of the ancestor Dawiḏ, that he died and was buried,1 and his tomb is with us to this day. Footnote: 1See v. 34. Act 2:30 “Being a prophet, then, and knowing that Elohim had sworn with an oath to him: of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, to raise up the Messiah to sit on his throne, Act 2:31 foreseeing this he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah, that His being was neither left in the grave, nor did His flesh see corruption. Act 2:32 “Elohim has raised up this יהושע, of which we are all witnesses. Act 2:33 “Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of Elohim, and having received from the Father the promise of the Set-apart Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. Act 2:34 “For Dawiḏ did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself said, ‘יהוה said to my Master, “Sit at My right hand, Act 2:35 until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’1 Footnote: 1Ps. 110:1. Act 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Yisra’ĕl know for certain that Elohim has made this יהושע, whom you impaled, both Master and Messiah.” Act 2:37 And having heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Kĕpha and the rest of the emissaries, “Men, brothers, what shall we do?” Act 2:38 And Kĕpha said to them, “Repent, and let each one of you be immersed in the Name of יהושע Messiah for the forgiveness of sins.1 And you shall receive the gift of the Set-apart Spirit. Footnote: 1See 2:40, 3:19, 3:26. Act 2:39 “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are far off, as many as יהוה our Elohim shall call.” Act 2:40 And with many other words he earnestly witnessed and urged them, saying, “Be saved from this crooked generation.”1 Footnote: 1Jer. 51:6, Phil. 2:15, Rev. 18:4. Act 2:41 Then those, indeed, who gladly received his word, were immersed. And on that day about three thousand beings were added to them. Act 2:42 And they were continuing steadfastly in the teaching of the emissaries, and in the fellowship, and in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers. Act 2:43 And fear came upon every being, and many wonders and signs were being done through the emissaries. Act 2:44 And all those who believed were together, and had all in common, Act 2:45 and sold their possessions and property, and divided them among all, as anyone might have need. Act 2:46 And day by day, continuing with one mind in the Set-apart Place, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, Act 2:47 praising Elohim and having favour with all the people. And the Master added to the assembly those who were being saved, day by day. In another instance that I Know of a man that I used to call a brother, but has lost his way now, turning to Idolatry with his family and teaching people to beak the commands of Yah, but still tries to keep Shabbat and the other Feast days, during a closing prayer started to do what people thought was speaking in tongues, but no one could understand him. He kept going on and on then he had to be asked to stop. No one in the Assembly could understand what he was saying at all. When people start getting off the narrow path they slip into all kinds of bad things that they justify in their minds as being OK to do in all kinds of Human Reasoning that is not according to scripture. Unclean spirits often are able to influence them to the point of not understanding where the right path is anymore. So it must be done the right way as you can see from scripture. There is nothing wrong with it if it is done properly! They also will tell you that unless you speak in tongues that you do not have the Ruach HaKo’desh. This is a lie as we are all given different gifts of the spirit. This is proven right here in the scriptures that I gave you. There is also no scripture that says what they try to say about tongues. Always make sure what they say lines up with scripture. Dont be angry at me about this post if you speak in tongues as some people get and fly off the handle showing no fruits of the spirit. There is a time and place for it and I am in no way saying it is wrong, but it is wrong in many cases. You must read what scripture says and not seek to your own human reasoning on this one. So argue with the scriptures and not me. Much Love and Shalom to you, Brother Jay
