ANSWER: The month of Ramadān begins when the new moon of Ramadān is sighted or when the month of Shaʿbān completes thirty days. In an authentic hadīth, Abū Huraīrah R.A narrated that Allah’s Messenger SAW said: ﺻُﻮﻣُﻮا ﻟِﺮُؤْﻳَﺘِﻪِ وَأَﻓْﻄِﺮُوا ﻟِﺮُؤْﻳَﺘِﻪِ ﻓَﺈ ِنْ ﻏُﺒﱢﻲَ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻜُﻢْ ﻓَﺄَﻛْﻤِﻠُﻮا ﻋِﺪﱠةَ ﺷَﻌْﺒَﺎنَ ﺛَﻼَ ﺛِﻴﻦَ Meaning: Fast when it is sighted (i.e., the new moon of Ramadān) and break the Fast when it is sighted (i.e., the new moon of Shawwāl) and if it (i.e., the new moon) is hidden from you then complete the month of Shaʿbān thirty days3. ____________________ 3 Sahīhul Bukhārī,1909; Sahīh Muslim, 1081.
