Kerry looked down and out when trailing by 6 points (3-12 to 2-9) with just eight minutes to go and had showed no signs of overturning that deficit, but the arrival of Keith Carmody, who had been club-tied from the start, steadied the Kerry rear-guard and big Michael O’Leary burst on the scene with three points (2 frees) on the trot to half the deficit. The big Abbeydorney man then struck a powerful goal after good work by Stephen O’Sullivan who prevented Wicklow from clearing and suddenly the game was there to be won. Fionán O’Sullivan and Jordan Brick duly added the winning scores under pressure and Kerry were in the hat for Monday’s open semi-final draw. Wicklow had first use of the wind and made good use of it scoring 1-1 inside the opening six minutes but Kerry recovered and a goal from Aaron Murphy and points from Daniel O’Carroll and Philip Lucid had the home side leading by the 11th minute. Wicklow hit back with 6 unanswered points (3 frees) before Kerry scored their second goal in the 21st minute when James Walsh finished a fine run by Aaron Murphy and the sides were level when Michael O’Leary pointed from 60 yds. At the break, Wicklow enjoyed a slender one point lead on a 2-5 to 1-9 score-line. Michael O’Leary restored parity on the resumption but Wicklow hit Kerry for goal number two in the second minute of the half and only desperate defending prevented another major a minute later. The sides swapped points throughout the third quarter but then Wicklow added a goal and a point within a minute of each other to lead by 3-12 to 2-9 and all looked lost for Kerry before O’Leary imposed his presence on the game in a very telling manner. Scorers: Kerry; Michael O’Leary 1-6 (0-3fr), Aaron Murphy 1-1, Jordan Brick 0-3, Jason Wallace 1-0, Philip Lucid 0-2 (1 fr), Daniel O’Carroll and Fionán O’Sullivan 0-1 each. * Kerry lined out with a couple of changes to the advertised lineout with Mike Lynch and Keith Carmody being withdrawn by their Club. Stephen Murphy came into goal with Brendan Dunne moving to right half back in place of Mike Lynch, and Chris Doncel came in for Keith Carmody.
