QUICK READ ---- BU There is really no suitable English translation for this character (bu in Japanese, as in Budo/Bujutsu, or wu in Chinese, as in wushu), which more accurately describes what we train for across any arena. Self-Defense misses the mark, because the name is confined to the self. Martial misses the mark because martial essentially refers to war. Combat (and its modern variations, such as Combatives etc) is about fighting, which itself also misses the mark. It is all these things but not................ The character is made up of the elements to stop and war, meaning to stop war/violence/fighting etc. This is a different mindset and transcends self-defense, martial arts, fighting and combat. Whether personal or global, the goal is maintaining peace and putting a stop to anything that gets in the way of peace. So the reason we learn to fight is to give us the strength to stop war/violence, or we otherwise get warred upon. That is the natural coexisting cycle of the predator/prey relationship.
