QUICK UPDATES RE: LA PORTE AS OF 10.27.14 Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity at the shelter. A couple dear friends of ours in rescue were there early in the morning to help get dogs out of there knowing that there were absolutely NO kennels open. They ended up leaving with six (6) little dogs, many of which were rescue only due to fear-based issues. I received the great news from them as I was driving to the shelter myself. Their prompt actions to get dogs out of there first thing was an absolute saving grace! With their rescue pulls, three kennels opened up, allowing us a little more time to try to get other dogs out of there. God Bless them!!! Yesterday would have been an impossible day without them. I arrived at the shelter mid-day and, with Laurens help, got Taz and Starla loaded for transport to Angel. Both dogs were very well-behaved during the car ride and at the clinic. They are calm, loving, beautiful dogs - BOTH of them! Taz weighed in at almost 50 lbs. Starla weighed in at around 46 lbs. Both dogs were, by the Grace of God, heartworm negative. I immediately notified Gia Jones who is the contact person with the rescue group that is considering both dogs. She has been firing off messages since that time but, unfortunately, we still DO NOT have a firm commitment that they are able to pull these dogs. Although we remain hopeful that we will hear good news from them, I have to ask that they both continue to be networked for rescue or adoption ASAP. Time is not on our side as the kennel remains perilously close to being full, even with yesterdays pulls. When I returned to the shelter with Taz and Starla, the officers were out on other calls. In the parking lot were two other cars, one of which I soon found out was a rescue group that had arrived to pull the Pomeranian (which had already left with our rescue partners earlier in the morning). The other car in the driveway belonged to a guy that was there to surrender his Labrador Retriever to be killed. The dogs name is Sam. His pictures, and story, will be posted here shortly. I decided to load Terry up to get her heartworm tested at Angel, too. I figured that the more information we had about her, the better our chances for finding a rescue group willing to step up for her. Sam joined us, too, for an exam. Information about both dogs will be posted here shortly so we can continue our networking efforts. Another rescue group (one which I have never heard of before) showed up while I was at Angel. They pulled Arctic, Charlie (another long-term, high euth risk dog), and two Shepherd mix pups. In the end, yesterday yielded trips to the vet for four of the shelter dogs, and 12 dogs were pulled by rescue. Even with all of that, however, more dogs came in leaving only FOUR (4) kennels open as of closing time when I left the shelter last night. We are praying for more miracles and would appreciate your ongoing efforts to find Taz, Starla, and Terry a safe place to go ASAP. I have to leave in an hour to get dog food and supplies for the shelter and to get two of my own dogs to the vet by 2 p.m. Heading to the shelter after that to deliver the food and to try to get a few more pictures of dogs needing to be networked before coming home. Needless to say, I wont be at my computer again much this afternoon.
