QUIDDITY by Lisa Cruz: ‘Hallow, Hollow, Holy’ It is when we feel a certain hollow- ness, emptiness, that it becomes the very point from which we view everything. But this hollow, as one feels one’s eyes are hollow, is not an unbridgeable distance between the world and me (the I and non-I). This hollowness is really a disappearance of the self (nihilation of desires?) and the world outside (perhaps hinted by quantum physics). Unity is impossible without disappearance, hollowness or as if producing a hole. Hence, hole- ness (holiness), being hallowed (as in hallowed be thy name) means whole- ness, rising above particularities and differences in order to embrace the non-self. Sartrean existentialist atheism and Buddhist spirituality both prize highly what we call nothingness. But this via negativa (by way of the negative) trend of thought is the opposite of the traditional Aristotelian (Western) metaphysics, characterized by rationalism and realism. Aristotelian metaphysics, with its logic as we know, is the very foundation of European modern science, politics, the civilization as a whole. We are used to via positiva (by way of positing the existence, the distinction of this from that, etc.) for otherwise no reality will be created because language itself is impossible without this via positiva trend of thought.
