QUINCY MOVES INTO FIRST PLACE TIE WITH DEFEAT OF REX W: Jake Powers (2-0) L: Kurt Kudrecki (0-2) S: Joseph Mortillaro (3) By John Yeley TERRE HAUTE, IN – After going 1-1 in consecutive extra-inning games against the Danville Dans, the REX found themselves with a one game lead over the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League’s West Division. On a windy, overcast evening at Bob Warn Field, the REX looked to lengthen the gap as they took on the Gems a day later. The REX offense wasted no time tackling the task at hand. Kyle Kempf hit a stand-up triple in his first at bat of the game, extending his streak to a league-best 15 games. Newly christened REX first baseman Brian Wolfe singled him in from the number three spot, giving Terre Haute a quick 1-0 advantage over starter Jake Powers and the Gems. The 4th inning saw a rally brewing for Quincy. After a double by Matt Marek off of the starter Kurk Kudrecki, a fastball to the side of Ryan Light and walk of Mike Wilson loaded the bases for the Gems. With two outs in the frame, left fielder Erik Maki stepped up to crush the offering, ending up with a bases clearing double to left and giving the Gems a 3-1 lead. Quincy tacked on another in the 6th thanks to yet another double by Matt Marek and subsequent RBI single by shortstop Nick Rosetti. The REX answered this with a solo homerun by Brian Wolfe in the bottom half to put the tally at 4-2 Quincy after 6 full innings. A single by Atlee Schwab and ensuing RBI blooper by Owen Conway saw the Quincy lead shrink to one in the 8th. The bottom of the 9th saw another near-rally, but the early damage proved to be too much however; the REX fell to the Quincy Gems 4-3 as the teams move in to a tie for first place in the West Division. ISU right-hander Kurt Kudrecki completed five innings for the REX, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five. A combination of Trevor Haas, John-Robert Patterson, and Kyle Zimmerman allowed just one run the remainder of the game. Jake Powers of the Gems picked up his second victory on the year, keeping the REX offense under control in 7 2/3 frames, allowing three runs on six hits. Closer Joseph Mortillaro stifled a near-rally in the ninth as he picked up his third save of the year and maintained a scoreless summer season. The REX (11-6) will have a day to rest before beginning a five-day road trip in Springfield on Wednesday, battling it out against the last-place Sliders at 7:05 EST in Lanphier Park.
