QUOTES AND THOUGHTS... ‘’Let us know that we have a Mother Mary and a great Brother Jesus. We are not alone.’’ Pope Francis during his visit to the Philippines. The Typhoon Yolanda victims of the Visayas in the Philippines where a little short of 10,000 died or were lost somewhere...needed the Pope’s visit, a much-needed presence that could not substitute for any thing material -- food, clothing, shelter, money . it is the unexplainable ‘’mere presence’’, ‘’being there’’ with them, feeling their laments, their losses, their desperations, their inevitable question ‘’WHY, LORD, WHY?’’ Nobody knew the answer to that... But coming from the Pope, people are ABLE to take in whatever situation they seem to be in. The Pope told the victims that he had no answer to the ‘’WHY’’ because God alone had the answer to their questions. He assured them though, ‘’DO NOT FEAR, I AM HERE WITH YOU NOW...’’ Such words were enough for the people of God in the Visayas. The sincerity of the Representative of Christ on earth, the Successor of Peter, his ‘’do-or-die’’ onslaught of the strong rains and winds of that day when he showed up at Tacloban and Leyte, was enough manifestation of his words –‘’DO NOT FEAR, I AM HERE WITH YOU...’’ He joined them in the rain, wore a yellow raincoat, such as theirs, daring the rains and the winds to deter him from going on with the MASS, celebrated amidst the wetness of a sea of faces, touched by the presence of the SAVIOUR HIMSELF THROUGH THIS SIMPLE, HUMBLE, LOWLY, SMILING AND GENTLE ONE THEY CALL THE POPE FOR EVERYONE...indeed, no one hesitated, no one shirked, everyone stood up with him against the tempests and the storm...HOW COULD THEY FEAR? I was just watching the goings-on on television in the hospital where I was confined, an uncanny sickness that coincided with the Pope’s visit, but I could not contain my tears as I joined in the Mass, empathizing with them, wet and crowded, withering, literally the winds and the rains. Oh...I felt so good... I felt JESUS AND MARY with all of us in that Mass at the airport...VIVA IL PAPA FRANCESCO...VIVA JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH....mcnol.012415.
