Qatar awards contracts for new mega constainer port that is to replace Doha To move Qatars New Port Project (NPP) along, contracts have been awarded to develop a new container port in Mesaieed, south of the capital Doha, that local media reports say are worth up to QAR14 billion (US$3.8 billion). The new port will replace the existing Port of Doha. Transport Minister Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti announced that half of the contracts have been awarded to national contractors. Qatari companies have won 53 per cent of the contracts or around QAR8.2 billion (US$2.24 billion), Mr Al Sulaiti told Qatars Al Raya daily. The minister said that half the port had been constructed, with the first phase to begin operations in 2016, with a capacity of two million TEU, then six million TEU when two and three are completed. Covering an area of 26 square kilometres, the new port will be one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken by Qatar and one of the largest port developments in the world.
