Qatar’s energy and industry sector gathers for annual sustainability ceremony • H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada launches the 2013 Report on Sustainability in the Qatar Energy and Industry Sector • Twelve companies receive award for excellence in sustainability reporting and performance • The sector reaffirms its commitment to implement sustainability strategy, public reporting, quality assurance and stakeholder engagement His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry, today launched the 2013 Report on Sustainability in the Qatar Energy and Industry Sector and awarded 12 companies for excellence in sustainability reporting and performance in 2013. The annual report on sustainability is a key component of the Sector Sustainability Programme, which aims to enhance the management of economic, environmental and social impacts within the energy and industry sector, thus optimizing its contribution to the continued development of the State of Qatar. It constitutes a commitment by the sector towards the implementation of economic, human, social, and environmental sustainable development as proclaimed by the Qatar National Vision 2030, and the Qatar National Development Strategy 2011-2016 In his comments on the occasion, H.E. Dr. Al-Sada expressed pleasure at the increasingly stronger reporting foundation, which is enabling all participants to place firm emphasis on performance improvements, long-term strategy and target-setting, implementation of policies, and stronger international engagement. H.E. Dr. Al-Sada said, “This reflects commitment to fulfilling the requirements of sustainable development, which lies at the heart of Qatar’s National Vision and National Development Strategy, as guided and launched by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar.” His Excellency said sustainable performance by the energy and industry sector has positioned Qatar as a responsible global energy provider with a world-class practice. H.E. Dr. Al-Sada called upon the participating companies to complete their 5-year sustainable development strategies with well-defined performance targets. “It is time that sustainability becomes a dedicated process by all companies and across the entire energy and industry spectrum,” His Excellency added. The Minister of Energy and Industry concluded by saying: “Our success depends on the collective efforts by the entire spectrum of the energy and industry sector in promoting higher levels of sustainability performance and innovation.” Now on its fourth year, the annual sustainability ceremony is one of the largest events organized by the Ministry of Energy and Industry in partnership with Qatar Petroleum (QP). Held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Al-Sada, the event was also attended by H.E. Dr. Saleh bin Mohamed Al-Nabit, Minister of Development Planning and Statistics; H.E Mr. Ahmad bin Amer Al-Hemaidi , Minister of Environment; Dr. Ibrahim Al-Ibrahim, Economic Advisor to His Highness the Emir, and Professor Sheikha Al-Misnad, President of Qatar University. Also present during the event were QP directors and corporate managers, the CEOs and other top officials of the 36 participating companies from the sector, as well as by senior delegates from ministries and various government agencies. In addition to the formal launching of the report, the event also featured a technical session to discuss the 2013 report highlights, the awards assessment process, as well as the global trends and best practices related to sustainability. On the sidelines of the event, all 36 participating companies also had exhibition booths, wherein they showcased their sustainability projects and innovative case studies as well as present their company-level sustainability reports for 2013. During the event, a video was also screened, showcasing the energy and industry sector’s commitment and success stories related to its contribution to sustainable development, socio-economic impact and industry best practices particularly in health, safety and the environment (HSE). As part of the Sector Sustainability Programme, QP’s HSE Regulations and Enforcement Directorate also implements the Excellence in Sustainability awards to recognize sustainability management and performance. All 36 companies that submitted their annual sustainability reports automatically qualified for the award scheme. An independent judging panel consisting of world-renowned sustainability experts then assessed the reports to select the winners. A total of eight companies were named winners of the awards for excellence in sustainability management, occupational health and safety, environmental management, as well as socio-economic and CSR activities, while four other companies received special awards for their innovative projects and programmes. For Excellence in Sustainability Reporting, the winner was Qatargas Operating Company Limited, while RasGas Company Limited was recognized for Excellence in Sustainability Management. The awardees for Excellence in Occupational Health and Safety were Oryx GTL Limited and Wintershall Holding GmbH, while the winners for Excellence in Environmental Management were Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) and Ras Girtas Power Company. In addition, the winners for Excellence in Socio-Economic and CSR Activities were Qatar Fuel Additives Company Ltd. (QAFAC)and Occidental Petroleum of Qatar. The recipients of special awards, on the other hand, were Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for its innovative Tarsheed Programme and for best first-time sustainability report, Qatar Steel for its innovative waste recycling and waste management practices, and Dolphin Energy Limited for innovative stakeholder mapping and engagement. Meanwhile, Qatar Aluminium (Qatalum) received a certificate of commendation for outstanding contractor management. Commenting on the future of the Sector Sustainability Programme, Mr. Saif Al-Naimi, Director of QP’s HSE Regulations and Enforcement Directorate, said: “As the 2013 reporting cycle draws to a close, it is clear that the sector sustainability programme is continuing to improve, supporting 36 companies in the development of their sustainability management and reporting programmes.” “This year, participation in the programme has improved in many ways, with more companies submitting more data and releasing their sustainability reports to the public. For the first time, the companies reported on their sustainability strategies and approaches to sustainability management and governance. With this greater depth of knowledge and insight into performance and future plans, the programme can continue to evolve and deliver greater value to companies and the sector as a whole,” he stressed. Mr. Al-Naimi added: “To enhance participation in the programme, support and guidance were provided on reporting, assurance, strategy and sustainability management and governance in 2013. Last year’s feedback initiative also helped the companies to make improvements to their reports. We also continued to strengthen the awards programme with the inclusion of a panel of three fully independent judges who selected the winners in an assessment process that was managed by a UK sustainability expert.” QP aims to engage a wider audience on sustainable development in a more interactive manner and has created an online version of the “2013 Report on Sustainability in the Qatar Energy and Industry Sector” with links to individual company reports. الاستدامة السنوي في قطاع الطاقة والصناعة، الذي يعقد للسنة الرابعة هذا العام، أحد أضخم الأحداث السنوية التي تنظمها وزارة الطاقة والصناعة بالمشاركة مع قطر للبترول. وعقد هذا العام تحت رعاية سعادة الدكتور السادة، وبحضور سعادة الدكتور صالح بن محمد النابت، وزير التخطيط التنموي والإحصاء، وسعادة السيد أحمد بن عامر الحميدي، وزير البيئة، والدكتور إبراهيم الإبراهيم، المستشار الاقتصادي لسمو الأمير، والأستاذة الدكتورة شيخة بنت عبد الله المسند، رئيس جامعة قطر. كما حضر الحدث عدد من مدراء الشؤون ومدراء الإدارات في قطر للبترول وعدد من مدراء الشركات، والرؤساء التنفيذيين، وغيرهم من كبار المسؤولين من ست وثلاثين عرض شريط فيديو أبرز التزام قطاع الطاقة والصناعة والانجازات المتعلقة بمساهمته تجاه التنمية المستدامة، والتأثير الاجتماعي الاقتصادي، والأداء الصناعي الأمثل لاسيما في مجال الصحة والسلامة والبيئة. كجزء من برنامج استدامة القطاع طورت إدارة شؤون نظم الصحة والسلامة والبيئة في قطر للبترول مكافآت للامتياز في مجال الاستدامة تقديرا لإعداد التقارير والأداء العالي الجودة. تأهلت جميع الشركات الست والثلاثون لتي قدمت تقاريرها السنوية للاستدامة بشكل تلقائي لبرنامج المكافآت. وقد تم تقييم التقارير من قبل لجنة تحكيم مستقلة مكونة من خبراء مشهورين عالميا في مجال الاستدامة. كان هناك اثنا عشر رابح لجوائز التميز في إعداد تقارير الاستدامة، وإدارة الاستدامة، والأداء في مجالات الصحة المهنية والسلامة، والأنشطة الاجتماعية الاقتصادية والمسؤوليات الاجتماعية المشتركة ، وتتضمن جوائز خاصة للمشاريع و البرامج المبتكرة. وقد حصلت شركة قطرغاز على جائزة التميز لأفضل معد لتقارير الاستدامة، وشركة راس غاز على جائزة التميز في إدارة الاستدامة. وقد حصلت كل من شركة أوريكس جي تي ال، وشركة وينترشل القابضة على جائزة التميز في الصحة المهنية والسلامة. وقد حصلت كل من شركة قابكو وشركة راس قرطاسعلى جائزة التميز في الإدارة البيئية. وقد حصلت كل من شركة قطر للإضافات البترولية، وشركة اوكسيدينتال قطر للبترول على جائزة التميز في الأنشطة الاجتماعية الاقتصادية والمسؤولية الاجتماعية للشركات. وقد حصلت ثلاث شركات على جوائز خاصة للإبداع و تلقت شركة أخرى شهادة تقدير . حيث حصلت المؤسسة العامة القطرية للكهرباء والماء ( كهرماء) على جائزة الإبداع عن برنامج ترشيد و أفضل تقرير استدامة مُعد للمرة الأولى. وحصلت شركة قطر ستيل على جائزة الأداء المبتكر في إعادة التدوير وإدارة النفايات، وشركة دولفين للطاقة على جائزة المساهم المبدع في التخطيط والالتزام. و حصلت شركة قطر الومنيوم على شهادة تقدير فيإدارة المتعاقدين. تعقيباً على مستقبل برنامج الاستدامة في القطاع، قال السيد سيف النعيمي، مدير إدارة شؤون نظم الصحة والسلامة والبيئة في قطر للبترول: مع قرب انتهاء الدورة السنوية لإعداد التقارير لعام 2013 ، أصبح من الواضح أن برنامج الاستدامة في القطاع مستمر في تطوير ودعم الست وثلاثين شركة لتنميتهم في مجال إدارة الاستدامة وبرامج إعداد التقارير. وقد تطورت خلال هذا العام المشاركة في البرنامج من أوجه مختلفة، حيثقدم عدد أكبر من الشركات بيانات أكثر و نشرت تقاريرها في مجال الاستدامة للعموم. وللمرة الأولىأعدت الشركات التقارير عن استراتيجياتها في مجال الاستدامة و مقاربتها في إدارة وتنظيم الاستدامة. ومن خلال المزيد من العمق في هذه المعرفة و الإدراكفي الأداء والخطط المستقبلية، يمكن للبرنامج أن يستمر في تطوير وتقديم قيمة عظيمة للشركات و القطاع بأكمله. أضاف السيد النعيمي: ولتعزيز المشاركة في البرنامج، تم توفير الدعم و التوجيه في مجال إعداد التقارير، والتأمين، والإستراتيجية، وإدارة وتنظيم الاستدامة لعام 2013. وقد ساعدت مبادرة المراجعة خلال السنة الماضية الشركات على القيام بتحسين تقاريرها. ونحن مستمرون أيضا في تعزيز برنامج المكافآت من خلال إدخال لجنة من ثلاثة حكام مستقلين تماما والذين قاموا باختيار الفائزين من خلال عملية تقييم قام بإدارتها
