Qlds environment : Winding back Labor’s measures to protect ecosystems and natural resources, the LNP has a very poor record on the environment which is the keystone of our economy. 1. LNP axed high conservation areas -National Parks (Recovery) - from the National Park Estate. 2. Commenced logging in State Forests earmarked for National Park status. Eg brigalow bioregion, of which c. 2% is protected in Qld. 3. Opened up FIVE National Parks and one NP (Recovery) to grazing. 4. Cut Labor’s program to buy and protect koala habitat. 5. Opened Nat Parks to private enterprise. 6. Sacked hundreds of public servants & scientists responsible for environmental monitoring and assessment. 7. Axed tree-clearing laws and thus increased carbon emissions; threatened at least 2M hectares of native vegetation. 8. Introduced permits to shoot flying foxes. 9. Liberal and LNP have legislated to move Federal Env. approval powers (EPBC Act) to the State Coordinator General. Labor & Greens want Federal powers upheld. They successfully introduced a water trigger for csg and large coal mines. 10. LNP has granted approval to Galillee Basin mines to use 4000 gigalitres of water which will have disastrous effects on aquifers and local graziers. It has failed to develop a hydrology model to assess effects on the Great Artesian Basin. 11. Labor created Nature Refuges - incentives to protect habitat on free-hold land. Bimblebox Nature Refuge will be destroyed by Waratah coal mine. Labor undertook to protect this NR. 12. LNP partnered with mining industry to downplay the damage of dredging and dumping on the Great Barrier Reef. 13. LNP took away the right of Qlders to legally object to mining projects that impact on the GBR. 14. Defunded the Environmental Defenders Office and its legal support for communities fighting inappropriate developments. 15. Limited rights to have a say on inappropriate development where residents can object; the LNP has ensured developers legal costs can be awarded against community objectors. 16. Removed riparian vegetation protections from the Water Act which will increase silt run-off and flooding downstream. 17. Changed the Water Act to allow over- allocation of Qld rivers and ground water. Reduced monitoring and staffing of this vital work. 18. Released millions of litres of contaminated mine water into the Fitzroy River Basin and out to the Great Barrier Reef. 19. Axed Wild River protections in North Qld, the Channel Country and Coopers Creek. 20. Extended sand mining on North Stradbroke Island until 2035. To do this LNP amended the Water Act requirements and aquifer protections. 21. The LNP cancelled renewable energy projects in Qld, including the Climate Smart Home Service and the Solar feed-in tariff. Closed the office of Climate Change. Labor believes in climate change, and actively supports renewable jobs and industries. 22. LNP abolished the Waste Levy which put the cost of waste back to the source. This encouraged dumping of waste from southern States. 23. Gutted coastal protection laws to allow massive development in coastal areas. 24. Removed the need for local Councils to account for sea level rise in Planning laws. 25. Opened oil shale extraction & production. 26. Recommenced uranium mining in Qld after a 23 year ban. 27. Shut down energy efficient Swanbank Power Station and fired up dormant coal-fired power stations. 28. Delbessie Agreement 2007 – Leasehold land use - gutted by LNP. 29. Removed laws to protect urban areas from Mining. [email protected] 16th Jan 2015
