Quarter-final clash tough to call Cathal Mullaney Castleconnor - TopicsExpress

Quarter-final clash tough to call Cathal Mullaney Castleconnor and Bunninadden meet in what promises to be an intriguing Kennedys Bar Intermediate Championship quarter-final tie at Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry this Sunday (2.30pm). This is a unique meeting in many ways – the sides haven’t met on too many occasions in recent years – and that makes it all the more difficult to predict. Castleconnor’s Group Two form was impressive, although they did lose once - that coming in the form of a five point defeat to St Patrick’s. An impressive scoring rate – they registered 3-25 and 3-23 against Eastern Harps and St John’s respectively – shows the potency of their forward line, but these scores came against teams in the weaker side of the championship grouping system. Bunninadden, who were relegated from the Senior grade last year, had to endure a slightly more taxing group campaign in Group One. They were without the services of Vincent Frizzell and Joe Rogers for these fixtures, but with both players set to return to the green and white this Sunday, the south Sligo men will be significantly bolstered. Castleconnor are looking to reach their third consecutive intermediate championship semi-final, and to do just that they will require big performances from their key marksmen. Kevin McDonnell and Stephen Curley are likely to feature prominently for Austin Clarke’s side, as will Kevin Langan and captain Eamon Cawley, but their defensive line will be weakened with Keith Earlis ruled out through injury. With little to choose between the teams, 60 minutes may not be enough to determine what team will progress to the last four.
