Queen Berry Update: Well, the bad news is that the ultrasound - TopicsExpress

Queen Berry Update: Well, the bad news is that the ultrasound confirmed Pancreatitis. So Berry is now hospitalized at ACCESS Specialty Vet Hospital, on IV fluids, antibiotics (Unyson), painkillers, and stomach protectants. I have ZERO experience with Pancreatitis, so Dr. Hadar explained to me that it is treated symptomatically -- basically, they try to make the dog feel better with the goal being eventually getting her to eat (which she really hasnt done normally for a few days, stopping at noon yesterday altogether). So we wait. Please keep pulling for her! I love her more than I can ever express, especially as I feel she is a link to my Momo (1996-2011). BTW, she has been in good spirits throughout, even though refusing food and drinking water like crazy. She stopped to smell every leaf and sidewalk crack outside the vet hospital today and observed the traffic on Ventura Boulevard with interest. Her cheerful, curious, life-affirming disposition is undimmed....so we will fight for her. Onwards! The good news is that the ultrasound showed her gallbladder is okay and her liver and kidneys are normal for her age. She DOES have a kidney cyst but Dr. Hadar says this is probably just an incidental finding and not causing or likely to cause any problem. Additionally she has protein in her urine, and low albumin, and no one quite knows why...but at least the ultrasound and X-rays have ruled out a lot of awful stuff: no cancer, no gallbladder mucocele, no fluid around heart, etc. Whew! Between yesterday and today, Berry has had full bloodwork, chemistry, urinalysis, urine culture (results pending), exam with general vet Dr. Cuellar, chest and abdominal X-rays to rule out heart/cancer problem, Pancreatitis snap test; then over to the specialty hospital for the consult with Dr. Hadar, which is required for the ultrasound...culminating in hospitalization with IV, antibiotics, stomach protectants, and pain relief shot. Los Angeles prices: It was $500 at Dr. Cuellars (and thats with a fifty per cent discount!). At the hospital where Berry is staying, the one-night estimate -- which is the deposit I had to put down -- is $1300. ( It will be lower per night for additional nights, as that huge lump includes todays ultrasound and consult.) I wish I could have kept her at Dr. Cuellars, as their discount is so generous, but unfortunately they are closed at night. I did as many diagnostics as I could at his place and brought the results to the specialist to save money. Berry is a furever foster here at Sheltie Rescue Alternative, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit charity. Any donations of money to her care in ANY amount would be hugely appreciated and gratefully accepted. THANK YOU! Its PayPal to nyevita@gmail or check payable to Sheltie Rescue Alternative, Inc. mailed to Eva Saks, 7443 Whitaker Avenue, Van Nuys CA 91406.
