Queen Between is the title of my new album and its also a song on that album. It quite a strange song unlike any other I and my guitarist/producer Sam Mills have written. Its a bit of a rabbit hole you can disappear down. The Queen Between can refer to anyone who doesn’t fit into a category. I mean if you are Queen or a King implies you have some kind of territory where your ‘royal’ person is a link between past and future. But most of us don’t actually don’t fit that neatly into the world where things are divided into categories like man, woman, human, animal, rich, poor, smart, stupid, good, evil, insider, outsider. We are half dreaming and half wake, semi-conscious at best. We are one person here and another person there, so what ties it together? Dreams, fantasies, stories, music. Or is money the ‘queen between’ ? It would make sense because money is a kind of abstract fiction albeit one we are required to respect. Or is it ‘love’ because we use ‘Love’ as a kind of mantra at times? We exist poised between knowing and unknowing, between what’s is our heads and what outside us. When you visit a temple sometimes you see a guardian of the threshold who is usually quite a fearsome figure. The threshold between domains is a strange place. If you think about when music is used in a wedding or a puja even in a movie and so on its usually to mark a kind of transition. So the “in between” spaces and place and people are sometimes the most interesting and ambiguous, as they are always morphing from one thing to another. In music its the movement of the note or chord are what keeps us involved.
