Queen Millie here. I have been asked by one of my royal subjects to post another excerpt from the Battle For Arohanui I have thought about it long and hard and have decided that it is time you were all introduced to some of the most terrifying of the creatures whom my daughter and her loyal friends must battle. Be warned this is a terrifying and troubling time in the kingdom. Read on at your at your own peril! As they ran Bridie worried over the situation. She was sure the dragons were setting a trap for them. Thinking back to what the Tugawhump had said about the shedragon and how intelligent she was, having stored thousands of years worth of knowledge in her large head. Bridie was certain they were walking into a shrewdly devised trap. They were nearing the lower region of the valley and stopped to scout out their surroundings. The faeries peeked through the tree tops first to be sure the hounds could look out without being seen. What they saw surprised them. A half a mile or so away it seemed the dragons had made some sort of nest and were guarding something inside. There was no sign of the shedragon but there were many greenhorns perched around the nest, wings braced against the ground and ready to leap into the air at the slightest provocation. So what do we do now? Liffey asked despondently. Just sit here and watch them until we freeze to death or wait for them to see us and scorch the hair from our bodies? I think we wait for now and do a little brainstorming, Finn said sagely. “Let’s see if we can come up with some sort of a plan This is not something to rush into blindly. We need to use stealth and great consideration in this matter. So they discussed their options whilst the faeries set about conjuring food for the weary search party. None had eaten this morning and they had travelled many miles now on empty stomachs. The faeries knew they would think better with food in their bellies, but were careful to do nothing to draw the attention of the watchful dragons. The hounds ate the food the faeries brought with little appetite or interest but listened to their little friends when they cajoled them into it. As they ate they continued to rack their brains for an answer to the problem. All were coming to the conclusion they would have to wait for the cover of darkness to attempt anything, as they were going to be far too exposed in the light of day. Hey! Whats that? Young Lennox asked suddenly. Look over there on the other side of the valley. Everyone looked to where the young knight was pointing and were shocked to see what looked to be a hound walking towards the nest and its scaly sentries. Who is it? Dermot asked. I dont know I cannot make it out from this distance, Florence said. She was renowned for her excellent eyesight, able to sight a squirrel a half mile away. If she could not distinguish the hound no one would. Look at the colour of the coat though, Liffey said to Finn. Do you think it could be Aidan? I hope not for he is surely on a path to certain death, Finn replied. Suddenly Lennox broke cover and ran out towards the dragons. The others looked on in horror as the knight drew the attention of the dragons to himself and away from the hound on the other side of the valley. What is he doing? Has he lost his mind? Bridie cried. Are all you knights so reckless? Do none of you value your lives or think of the others who rely upon your service? Dumfrees looked at the expression of concern and fear upon Bridies face and knew her words were said in fear for the lives of the two hounds, now completely exposed in the valley below. Looking out at the scene playing out before them, he felt the same dread. He believed he was about to see Lennox and whoever the stranger was lose their lives in front of their very eyes. Even though they did not wish to see their kin perish in such a horrible manner, none could peel their gaze from the scene. All looked on as if caught in a living nightmare without the ability of conscious choice. The dragons, seeing the threat, rose up into the air and let out a terrifying call. It made the blood run cold in the veins of all who heard it, and fear squeezed at their chests until they thought they might not breathe and their hearts would stop. Then from the cover of a large overhang on the cliff face opposite them a great shadow peeled itself from the wall. Its huge wings beat slowly but powerfully as it rose above the valley. It did not make its way to the spectacle playing out below but beat its way across the valley towards those who thought they had been unobserved. It did not take many beats of its wings to make the cliff face. Lifting its huge body vertically it spread its wings to land against the cliff face, its great talons grasping the rock. Bridie and the others now found they stood face to face with the shedragon. Someone passed wind nervously and noisily but even the least mature of them found no humour in that at this moment. The shedragon turned her head so her great blood red eye could observe them in all their puniness and she smiled a smile so malignant Bridie felt its hatred touch her. Behind the monster’s large head they could see the greenhorns circling as they called their blood curdling cry.
