Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has described his side’s lack of effort in the 3-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday as “appalling” and admits promotion to the Premier League will have to be done the hard way. The 31-year-old and his team-mates were outplayed in the Championship clash, which saw QPR defender Richard Dunne sent off for a foul on striker Leon Best. Harry Redknapp’s men are now 10 points off an automatic promotion spot with 10 matches remaining and look likely to have to battle through the play-offs. Barton took to social media platform Twitter to sympathise with supporters who travelled to Yorkshire for the match and said: “If people want to make up falsities, then that’s their prerogative. There are lots of excuses for last night, none are acceptable. “We simply werent good enough and the lack of effort was appalling. We let down any fans who travelled. But it’s gone. “Nothing can be done about it now. We must stay together in tough times, otherwise we will be in serious danger of not fulfilling our aim. “I still believe we can do it. Were gonna have to do it the hard way. But did anyone expect it any other way?” Barton also vowed not to dwell on the result, no matter how damaging it was to his team’s hopes of clinching promotion. “Now is the time for fronting up and to keep moving forward. Not the time for sulking. I have no time for negativity,” he added.
