Quest For Knowledge Mini History Lesson For Today: On October 1, 1924, United States President James “Jimmy” Carter was born in Plains, Georgia. There Carter spent his childhood, until going away to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, where he graduated in 1946. Carter planned to go into the Navy’s new nuclear submarine program, but the abrupt death of his father obliged him to return back to Georgia to look over the family farm. Back in Plains, Carter soon became involved in local politics, serving on the local school board, the Georgia State Planning Commission, the Georgia Senate, and then Governor of Georgia for one term. From this position, Carter launched his presidential campaign against incumbent Gerald Ford, which he won mainly due to his persona of a “Washington Outsider.” During Carters term as President, he created two new cabinet-level departments: the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. Building upon the work of predecessors, he established full diplomatic relations with the Peoples Republic of China and completed negotiation of the SALT II nuclear limitation treaty with the Soviet Union. While President, Carter famously brokered a peace treaty between the nations of Israel and Egypt, and oversaw the Tehran hostage crisis, in which he was unable to secure a speedy release of the hostages. This, coupled with the oil shortage and ongoing recession, caused Carter to lose the 1980 presidential election to Ronald Reagan. Even his presidency swirled with turmoil, but Carter’s s post-White House work promoting human rights, democracy and peace has earned him high praise. These actions have made Carter renowned as one of the most successful ex-presidents in US history. He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development through The Carter Center. Carter is a key figure in the Habitat for Humanity project, and also remains particularly critical of Israels role in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. https://youtube/watch?v=jxiF-C1_tME
