Question 26: Is it haram to work on the day of eid? Answer: I begin with the name of Allah and may eternal peace and blessings be upon our master Muhammad, his companions and all those who follow him. Both days of Eid are days of celebration that Allah, Most High, has given to this community of believers. When the Prophet, prayers and peace be upon him, migrated to Madina, he found that the people of Madina had two days on which they would have games. He asked them, ‘What are these two days?’ They said, ‘We would play games on these two days before Islam.’ He answered, ‘Allah, Most High, has replaced them with better, Eid Adha and Eid Fitr.’ Because these two days are days of celebration for have completed blessed days of worship the Prophet, prayers and peace be upon him, forbade fasting on these two days. These are two days where it is encouraged to visit family, visit the poor and be particularly generous towards family and those around us. This, however, does not make it impermissible to work on the day of Eid and if a person is required to work, he can do so. If one decides to work, Eid prayer must be performed as it is necessary and should only be missed if there is an excuse. If a person is self employed or can take time off work for Eid this would be best, in order to take part in the celebrations of the day. Remember that even though the obligation of Friday prayer is higher than the Eid prayer and the prohibition of working during the prayer time is stated in the Qur’an by Allah when he says in Sura Jum’ua, verse 9, ‘When the call to prayer is made on the Friday, hurry to the reminder of Allah and leave trading’ yet in the next verse He, Most High, continues to state, ‘then when the prayer has ended, disperse in the land and seek out Allah’s bounty.’ This is a directive to return back to work after having prayed the Friday prayer. So ensure that you pray the Eid prayer but if you have to work on the day there is no harm. Allah knows best. Haroon Hanif 10 Shawwal 1435 6 August 2014
