Question #5: What holster? This depends on how you want to carry. - TopicsExpress

Question #5: What holster? This depends on how you want to carry. Picture your waist as a clock with your belly button as 12. The most popular that Ive seen is strong side belt carry, meaning right handers will carry from about the 3 to 5 oclock position and left handers will carry between the 7 and about 9 oclock. With a crossdraw, a right hander would carry their pistol at about 10 or 11 oclock and a left hander would carry at about 1 or 2 oclock. For people that sit or drive a lot, this seems to work fairly well. However, it can be harder to conceal. Ankle holsters are worn on the opposite side of the body (left ankle for right handers and right ankle for left handers). They can be a very effective way to conceal a smaller or backup gun, but are slow to draw. You have to kneel down, lift the pants leg, draw the gun, then acquire your target and shoot. There are two kinds of shoulder holsters, vertical (the gun points up or down) and horizontal (the gun points back) under your arm. I cant recommend them for general use. The time that shooters are most likely to have negligent discharges are when drawing or holstering. Should that happen with a shoulder holster, there is a distinct possibility that youll be shooting at chest level into someone who doesnt deserve to be shot. The last carry position Ill cover is small of the back or SOB, and the gun is carried at the 6 oclock position. I not only cant recommend this, I will not train anyone who uses it and will not allow it on any range Im responsible for. This position leaves your pistol in an area where you are very likely to be seriously injured in the event of a fall and you have no major muscle groups to keep it in the holster in the event of an attempted gun grab. Drawing from SOB is nearly impossible to do without pointing your gun at someone and reholstering is difficult, at best. Most of the holsters Ive used are reviewed in the picture file titled equipment. My opinions on those holsters may not be yours. Dont plan to find the perfect holster the first time. It should hold the gun when the straps or snaps are undone and the holster turned upside down and shaken (with the gun unloaded and preferably held over a bed or padded surface, of course). It should hold its form when the gun is drawn and allow you to reholster with only one hand.
