Question: How do you do IT (Poetry) without an MFA or any other - TopicsExpress

Question: How do you do IT (Poetry) without an MFA or any other kind of degree, for that matter? I ask you APJ folks mainly because Ive come to respect your opinions on the matter. You know, I keep going back to Donald Halls famous essay The McPoem and take myself to task on its flipside: Under-educated morons like myself scribbling down fifth and sixth-rate versions of the McPoem, nurturing the delusion they might be publishable at some later date. I can take no comfort that folks like Hemingway and Keats never had an MFA because I am comparatively inept;I did, in fact, go to college and flunked pretty hardcore out of the more rigorous Literature classes, getting easy breezy upper marks in the undergrad CW programs where little if any critical thinking need apply. At a certain point soon, its going to be more productive for me to quit scribbling down utter trash and go get a job at McDonalds instead. I think that an MFA is generally a great thing. I dont know: Is it possible to create greater standards at the undergrad level to weed out the chuff like myself from ever carrying the delusion over into MFA level? Perhaps that would be beneficial, in a way, to what gets published in general. Overall, Im generally thankful for the love of reading and readership in general which mostly the Poets have given me. One less poet manque and one more pure reader, I think, wouldnt be such a bad thing. I hope this general question/discussion meets an acceptable APJ standard and isnt too far off-base. Im interested in other peoples perspectives on the general issue. Thanks ahead!
