Question: How long can we be out of Ecuador once we get our residency visa? Answer: For the first two years, you can be out of the country for 90 days each year. After the first two years, you can be gone 18 months for the next five years. This is the way it has always been, but depending on who you ask or what blog you read you will receive a different answer. Im amazed--shocked really--at the amount of incorrect information that is being passed around. When we were going for our citizenship we were told that we had to receive a pardon for being out of the country for 7 months, so we contacted our immigration attorney in Quito and she actually sent us Article 36 in the immigration law book which clearly states, After two years, you can be out of the country for 18 months before touching ground again in Ecuador. We were told by a visa expert and a prominent law firm in Cuenca that we would need to apply for our residency visa again before applying for citizenship (cost: $600). They were both clearly wrong. I only share this information because there is a lot of misinformation out there. The Chamber of Commerce in Cuenca recently did an entire session on residency visas and they also cleared up the error circulating regarding 18 months versus 180 days. They specifically stated that it is18 months after the first two years.
