Question: I am 20 years old and losing my hair at the sides of my hairline. Am I a candidate for a hair restoration surgery? Dr. Anderson: 20 is simply too young. The overriding principle in hair restoration surgery is to maintain a natural appearance. This means always having the pattern of hair on the scalp a natural one, one that is found on people who have have no hair restoration procedures. If one, for instance, transplants your hairline, and then you progress over the next 10 years to a Norwood Class 6 (eg: advanced pattern of male pattern baldness), you will look unnatural as your hair line will still be there. As you age into your 20s and 30s and into your 40s, it becomes easier to tell how much hair loss is going to occur in ones life, and thus the hair restoration surgeon can keep his patients looking natural throughout their lives. There are many non-surgical options that could work to slow, stop, or in some cases, reverse the hair loss with continued use. These options include: a) LLLT - low level laser light therapy (such as a laser comb or laser cap has been proven in studies to aid in hair loss. In one study, 80% of patients reported a significant drop or halt to their rate of hair loss, and just over 50% of patients reported increased hair density and thickness. b) Cellular therapy with PRP/ACell. PRP, or Platelet Rick Plasma, when combined with the biotechnology product ACell has been shown in some studies to reduce the rate of hair loss, and in some cases reverse it. It is a medical procedure that concentrates and harnesses your bodies cells of healing (eg: platelets) to revitalize hair in the process of miniaturization. It involves zero scarring, and is about a one-hour, out-patient procedure. Local anesthetic is used to control discomfort, and no sedation is typically necessary. c) Medications. This includes finasteride 1mg per day by mouth, as well as minoxidil 5% foam. The finasteride works by blocking the enzyme that makes over 50% of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), reducing the hormones levels throughout your entire body. DHT is the hormone that is typically associated with male pattern balding, and lowing its level tends to slow the rate of hair loss. In some cases it can reverse the hair loss, and this is most often seen in young people, such as a 20 year old man.
