Question: I am interested to know about the process of writing a will according to Islam. While I understand that I can choose to declare in my will to give away up to a third of my assets in charity, is it possible for me to give back to the organizations I worked for? I am asking because I am afraid that of all the time spent during work hours, I may not have been able to devote it completely to my work related activities. Therefore, I am wondering if I can give a portion of my assets back to all the organizations that I would have worked for during my lifetime. Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh Thank you for your question. Preparing a will in Islam is encouraged and instructed by Allāh and His Prophet (peace and blessings upon him). Writing a will in Islam is simple. Blood relatives have been assigned specific portions of a deceased wealth and assets. One can only bequest one third of one’s wealth to non heirs. This one third can be allocated as you wish. Hence, there is no objection if you assign one third of your wealth to organizations you have worked for. You would obviously stipulate that in your written will. “There is a share for men and a share for women from what is left by parents and those nearest related, whether the property be small or large, legally fixed shares by Allāh” (Holy Quran 4:7) Our advice to you is to consult both legal experts and Islamic scholars to help prepare your Will. It is also advisable to appoint executors (individuals, organization or trust company) along with witnesses. Thereafter, legal experts will help you register your will and make it an official document recognized by the your government. And Allah knows best.
