Question Of The Week: Q- “I heard the current Sheriff was going to retire but (insert random name here) told him he needed to stay, to keep the department from falling apart.” A- We’ve heard about five different variations of this rumor, since the campaign started. The fact is, this Sheriff’s Office has existed for over 100 years. Its operations are governed by the Constitution, state law, county ordnance, and common sense. It is staffed with a crew of (mostly) good and dedicated deputies. It isn’t going to “fall apart” if the magic touch of any one person isn’t on the steering wheel. Things could be run better, however. Let’s face it- when you consider the more than 100% turnover of line deputies and supervisors over the last two terms, it’s obvious that “magic touch” isn’t so magic. If 100%+ turnover is the result of good leadership, what does bad leadership look like? If you’re tired of the “good-old-boy” system of hiring fishing buddies and making back room political deals, demand more from your next Sheriff.
