Question: Religion is not needed but Relationship with God Answer: Many anti - catholics specially The born again often say that “Religion” is not needed. Are they telling the truth? This is the problem of some people who were able to read a few verses of the Bible. They think that only John 3:16 is written in the Bible. The Holy Bible is so thick so we need to study it as a whole. Religion cannot save man unless man obeys what religion teaches. If religion is not needed, why does the Apostle Paul have a religion? “No one can deny how great is the secret of our religion:He appeared in human form, was shown to be right by the Spirit, and was seen by angels.He was preached among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, and was taken up to heaven.”(1 Timothy 3:16, Good News Translation) His religion teaches how man can be saved. “Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.”(1 Timothy 4:16) If religion is not needed, why is God concerned about religion? The Greek word for religion is Threiskeia. “θρησκεία καθαρὰ καὶ ἀμίαντος παρὰ τῷ θεῷ καὶ πατρὶ αὕτη ἐστίν,ἐπισκέπτεσθαι ὀρφανοὺς καὶ χήρας ἐν τῇ θλίψει αὐτῶν, ἄσπιλον ἑαυτὸν τηρεῖνἀπὸ τοῦ κόσμου. (James 1:27, Greek Bible) If you will read this… Threiskeia kathara kai amiantos para theo kai patri ‘autei estin, episkeptesthai orphanous kai cheiras en tei thlipsei auton, aspilon ‘eauton teirein apo tou kosmou. In English… “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”(James 1:27) There is a religion that follows the Will of God. According to Saint James, becoming a Christian requires understanding attitude. One example is to visit orphans and widows during their sorrow. That is why Saint James preached about morality and good acts which is religious and pro-Catholic. The Works of Mercy is strong foundation for the Catholic Worker Movement. It is a big deception to say that religion is not needed but only a relationship with Christ. Now my question is: Where in the Bible can you read that only relationship and not religion is needed?
