Question: Sir! In Madina Sharif, Salah is equivalent to 50 000 folds of Thawaab and in Makkah Sharif you get 100 000 Thawaab. This proves that Makkah Sharif is more excellent than Madina Sharif. Is this true? Answer (By Imam Ahmad Rida) It is the consensus of the Ulama of the Hanafi school that Makkah Sharif is more excellent than Madina Sharif. But according to Imam Malik, Madina Sharif is superior and this is also the view of Hadrat Umar Al-Faruk radi Allahu anhu. My view is the same as Hadrat Umar’s. In Sahih Hadith it is mentioned: “Madina is better for him who understands” (Sahih Muslim) Another Hadith explicitly states: “Madina is more excellent than Makkah” (Fath-Al-Qadir) Shaykh Abd Al-Haq Dehlvai alayhir rahmah explained: “There is quantity and number in Makkah, but spiritual elevation is found in Madinah.” This means that in Makkah the Thawaab is greater, but in Madinah the spirituality is great. Which is greater in value, 100 000 bank notes or 50 000 gold bricks? In quantity, the banks notes are double, but in value, the golden bricks are much greater in value. In Makkah, as you receive 100 000 Thawaab for a single good deed, similarly, there are 100 000 sins recorded for every sin. On the contrary, in Madinah sharif, there is Thawaab of 50 000 for every single good deed whereas only one sin is recorded for a single sin committed.
