Question: What does God know about us? Psalm 139 offers a great view of what God knows about us. We can see a great display of God’s abilities, and what we should do based on the truth about our great God. One of our weaknesses is in recognition. We do not see properly what is going on around us. Isaiah tells of a people who heard, but did not understand, who saw, but really didn’t see. This is God’s world. You are created to be God’s. We are saved to worship God together. Do you really recognize God’s presence in your life? God is all knowing. In verses 1-6, we can see that God knows us completely. If you look carefully, you will see that God knows your thoughts, your ways, and your words. He also knows your past and your future. We may or may not want to understand it, but it doesn’t change the facts. God knows you. He knows you better than you know you. It causes us to think, as the writer does, that this is “too high” for us. We can have two different reactions to this. We can either accept this, or attempt to escape from it. If we attempt to escape, we run into the fact that God sees all. Verses 7-12 tell us that God sees wherever we go. He sees us any time. The night and the day are the same to Him, whether we try to hide activities by cloak of night. We cannot even escape God in the hereafter. Why does God have such a complete awareness of us? He has made us, and He thinks about us extensively. Verses 13-18 tell us about God’s work in making us. These verses tell us of the process of growth of a child in the mother’s womb that is directed by God. We are like a weaving or knitting as we are put together pre-birth and become one of God’s masterpieces. He sees our skeleton even in the earliest of embryonic growth. God develops us, and He writes about us in a book. We are the subject of many of His thoughts. God’s thoughts of us are “more than the sand” (v.18). How should we react to all this? Verses 19-24 tell us that we ought to have a loyalty to God. We should love what He loves and hate what He hates. It’s not easy to hate sin in this present age. But it is important. Also, we should welcome God’s examination of our lives. He will look anyway! Don’t believe your life is hidden from God. He knows what’s happening!
