Question: Why didnt bombers ever get fitted with drop tanks? They could have used the fuel for assembly over England and then dropped them, before heading out over the Channel. (Maybe even with some sort of soft landing precaution, a mini-parachute, for instance, so they could be collected and re-used.) In the Pacific, I guess, they would just have to drop them over the ocean, but still ... Does anybody know of any experimentation with this idea during the war?
