Question: Why do you charge a cutting fee? Answer: A cutting fee is a charge imposed per yard should you purchase your own fabric somewhere else and bring it to me to use on your piece. I charge this fee because my time is worth something. Let us say you find your fabric at JoAnns or Hobby Lobby on sale with a 30% off coupon and you get it for a really great price, it looks great with your decor, its the perfect colors and you want it on your chair. You bring it to me with your chair but it is not truly UPHOLSTERY fabric. I have to struggle and pull and it tears and frays and so I staple and resew to reinforce the seams and it takes me twice as long to upholster using a fabric that was not designed for upholstery use. Sometimes people do not bring enough fabric or do not compensate for a pattern repeat. I have to cut seams more narrow or cut welt straight across rather than on the bias or your stripes will not match up but I will try my hardest to make it look as good as I can and it takes more of my time (at least twice as long). I pride myself in putting out a quality piece and when low quality fabric is used the piece just does not look as good as when the proper fabric is used. I sell fabrics specific for the upholstery trade here in my shop. They are not seconds, left overs or last run patterns and they are all of the highest quality. They cost anywhere from $10 and up and are price competitive and run sales often, almost weekly. These fabrics are guaranteed against things like pilling, fading, wear, fraying and sometimes stain resistance. I would rather discount my in-house fabrics for a customer than struggle with poor quality any day. If you are willing to pay to have a chair reupholstered, make the investment worth it by using good fabrics. You may not have a coupon but over the life of your furniture wouldnt you rather have fabric that will outlast the cost of reupholstery?
