Question for AAU organizations / coaches. #1. Is a college coach more impressed with your points per game or your Grade Point Average. #2. Does having a high profile player help your program more than your program helps the player. #3. If a player is the next Lebron James and plays for The Minnesota Hillbillies will he not get recruited because he doesnt play for a supposedly popular local AAU team. #4. Are you honest with parents and kids and tell them that there are more academic scholarships than athletic scholarships. Therefore, the odds off them paying you thousands of dollars and getting exposure is far less possible than have a 3.8 GPA and getting accepted into a university. ****** PARENTS LET DO SOME MATH ON AN AVERAGE AAU TOURNAMENT AND SEE WHY THEY WANT YOUR KID TO PLAY : ENTRY FEE : $250.00 PER TEAM 60 TEAMS EQUALS : $15,000.00 So we are at $15,000.00 profit and not a game has been played. the average weekend tournaments cost 7.00 per day for 2 days and the attendance is about 5,000 people. That equals $42,000.00 We are now up to : 15,000 + 42,000 = $57,000.00 Concessions : Now notice that the players do not get free drinks so everyone is paying at the concession stand. Lets just say about the average family is going to spend over $40.00 over the weekend on concessions : that would be 60 teams with 10 players per team would equal 600 players and 5,000 people, So 5,600 people spending $40.00 over a weekend equals : $224,000 $224,000 at concessions 42,000 - Admissions 15,000 - Registration Total : $281,000.00 for 3 days. Now I did not figure in the expenses of the tournament cost of gyms ( but middle school gyms are not that expensive) , refs (the boot leg refs they have at these tournaments are probably offered the brown paper bag gift, for those who dont know that is a bottle of liquor ). On average a tournament grosses about $150,000 in 2 days. Hey maybe I should get into the AAU tournament business. Come on people like my man says in school daze WAKE UP.
