Question for all of you who are Christian: If you lived in the Middle East today and were attempting to follow the teachings of Jesus as either an Israeli or a Palestinian, who do you think should turn their cheek first in light of the following teaching of Jesus, you or your enemy? Im asking you as an individual, not as a government or a people. Do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other also. (Matt 5:39) I suppose it depends on who you think is in the right. The one who is in the right should stop resisting the evil aggressor in this teaching. So who should turn their cheek? A) You as an Israeli Christ follower, or B) you as a Palestinian Christ follower, or C) Both, or maybe D) Wow, theres got to be a way to interpret this teaching in a way that allows me to permanently send my enemy into a place of wailing and gnashing of teeth where they clearly belong. Keep in mind that when Jesus spoke these words, an enemy was at hand, and had already crucified thousands in his lifetime. Also remember, Im addressing this question to you as an individual, not directed to your group or your leaders. A very difficult question for your consideration from me, Ted, who has dear friends on both sides of this conflict and finds the teachings of Yeshua staggering and stunning at once. Be heard below in the comments. Maybe we can start our own war of words right here on this post :) Or not.
