Question for the group!: I am reading a book (Al Dunnings Art of Hackamore Training) about Hackamores and starting youngsters in them instead of a snaffle. I may not have read far enough yet, but, when transitioning the young horse to the bit, do you then go to the snaffle or straight to a correction and/or shank bit? I know that the transition still incorporates the hackamore and two sets of reins so the horse is still familiar/comfortable with existing cues. How many of you start your youngsters this way or do you only do it if you are training a hackamore horse only? I read some people like this was because it keeps the youngsters mouth virgin and possibly bruise free from bits and makes them more willing. I am hoping to do reined cow horse with my coming 2yr old filly and could like to try her in a hackamore, she is naturally very sensitive to my ground training cues and was thinking she would take to a hackamore nicely. Thanks to everyone in advance!
